Single-Shot is a term that was first used to describe the analysis of a sample at a single temperature. Historically, Single-Shot was applied to the flash pyrolysis of a sample. The sample is instantaneously subjected to a temperature high enough to break organic bonds. The degradation products or pyrolyzates provide insight into the chemistry of the initial sample. |

More recently, the term has come to mean the analysis of a sample at a given temperature. This broadens the scope of the term to include thermal desorption, reactive pyrolysis, as well as flash pyrolysis. |
