The surface of the stainless steel cup is covered by a layer of fused silica. It is primarily a silica surface with a population of silanol (Si-OH) groups. It is thermally stable beyond 1200℃. The surface can be degraded when a propane torch is used to “clean” the cup. Temperatures in excess of 1800℃ can be reached with a propane flame. Surface activity can adversely effect the recovery of easily degrade compounds such as Decabromodiphenly ether.
